Visual identity for the Trienniale EKO, an international triennial of Ecology and Art, established in 1980 in Maribor. This year’s ninth edition, titled Eyes in the Stone, draws parallels between contemporary art practices, the genre of horror films, and the impending ecological crisis. The venue for this year’s triennial is the former Dr. Mirko Černič Sanatorium in the center of Maribor, now an abandoned modernist villa built in 1930.
The visual identity is composed of the image of the so-called Ajdovska deklica (Heathen Maiden), historical photographs of the Maribor Sanatorium published in its promotional materials, the recognizable arch shapes of the windows and stucco details of the building, and the undigitized Victorian typeface Clematis from 1885.
Ajdovska deklica is a Slovenian folk tale about a girl who, after being cursed by her sisters, is forever trapped in the stone wall of a mountain. Visually, she is associated with the rock formation on the north wall of Prisank, a mountain in the Julian Alps.
